Mattel's first Down Syndrome Barbie Doll |

With a gender-neutral doll, Mattel hopes to break taboos and appeal to a generation that wants activism in it brands https://t.co/VlRnzRY0Ph— Tigrikorn 🐯🦄✨🌈 (@odouglasj) September 26, 2019
Reminder: MATTEL broke ground, not too long ago, on keeping up with cultural trends with "Man-Bun Ken".
I'm guessing that Ken doll paid off enough in sales or at least in publicity to encourage them to continue to adapt their production line to the gender-neutral culture trend. Whatever the sales of the new toys, it might be enough to just create good will on consumers who feel fine buying the company's classic toys since they know its execs have a social conscience. Or will there be boycotts by conservatives? Time will tell.
2022 UPDATE (and behind the scenes look at what might have forced Mattel to focus on its diversity strategy):
"[Since] losing the license to Hasbro in 2014, Mattel ... turned its focus to refurbishing its Barbie brand by launching a range of gender-neutral dolls as well as dolls with different skin tones." Mattel reclaims rights for Disney Princesses from Hasbro https://t.co/bYaLd9VHr6
