Jonatan Aron Leandoer Håstad, known professionally as Yung Lean, was born on July 18, 1996, in Stockholm, Sweden. He spent part of his early childhood living in Minsk, Belarus, before moving back to Sweden. Growing up, he became fascinated by hip-hop music, graffiti, and creative youth culture. In 2012, at sixteen years old, he formed a musical group called Sad Boys with two producer friends, Gud and Yung Sherman. Together, they started recording songs with a slow, dreamy, and emotional sound.

Yung Lean became famous around the world in 2013 after the music video for his song "Ginseng Strip 2002" went viral on YouTube. He quickly followed this success with his first mixtape, Unknown Death 2002, and his first full album, Unknown Memory, in 2014. With his signature style—wearing bucket hats and rapping over slow, spacey beats—Lean helped launch popular subgenres of hip-hop known as "cloud rap" and "emo rap." He was one of the first European teenagers to gain a huge international fan base purely through the internet.

As his fame exploded, Lean struggled with his health and the sudden pressure of stardom. In 2015, while living in Miami to work on his second album, Warlord, heavy stress and drug use led to a severe mental health crisis and time in the hospital. After returning to Sweden to recover and receive treatment, Lean returned to music with a deeper perspective. His later albums, like Stranger (2017) and Starz (2020), showed a more mature side of his art as he explored themes of growing up, coping with hard times, and finding his identity.

Today, Yung Lean is widely recognized as a major influence on modern music and internet fashion. He continues to experiment with different musical styles, even releasing folk and indie rock under the name Jonatan Leandoer96. Over the years, he has collaborated with major stars like Frank Ocean, Charli xcx, and Travis Scott. His unique path from an independent Swedish teenager to a worldwide trendsetter shows how internet culture can reshape the global music industry.
