Cool book I've been perusing: General Washington's Christmas Farewell, A Mount Vernon Homecoming 1783. Nice bit of historical writing by Stanley Weintraub and published by Free Press, 2003. It seems that the Revolutionary War had ended and Washington had to tie up the loose ends of the conflict so he could return to his home which he had not stayed in for more that a week for the near decade since the Rev. War begain.
The book gives a facinating picture of the shambles that was the United States at the end of the war and the amazing restraint as well as lack of personal lust for power that Washington displayed. England was predicting that he would become the dictator of the newly decolonised country, similar to the military dictators of Rome. Really a fun read.
Reading the calamities of the young U.S. reminds me of the snafu laden Iraq rebuilding effort. I hope years down the road we can say it turned out all right. I have a lot of tho'ts about the Presidential Elections. I'm getting rather disgusted by what I perceive as political games played by George W. Bush's administration for the election year. Bottom line: Partiality to Political funding Interest Groups and Pious Posturing to keep Christian/Conservative Support.
