Online Journal Entry: A Summer-like September Day

Full day. At work, where I am a member of a graphics department for a small sectarian publishing company, my load was typically light for this time in the quarterly production cycle. I did some trouble shooting for some projects that are now at the printer as well as making corrections on portions of products that will go to press later.....'sounds boring, I know, but more on fun aspects of my job later.

The weather was so gorgeous today that I knew I had to take advantage of it somehow. Tomorrow's cold front will make work outside unpleasant so I decided to mow the lawn ahead of my normal schedule. I loved being out there as the sun was sinking toward the horizon. I had changed out of my office clothes and put on shorts, a tank top, tennis shoes, baseball cap and sun glasses. Perfect breezes kept me from getting too hot as I burned approximately 230 calories mowing the grass on my smallish lawn. It might be one of the last Summer-like days before Fall.

While I was mowing my friend Jerome called to say he lost his job. I had just been thinking of him ...that I had not heard from him in a while. We use to carpool together over a year ago when we both worked for a manufacturer. Jerome worked in engineering and I worked in marketing. When Jerome moved to within 3 miles of my place, we began carpooling and got along well. We were both laid off from that employer around the same time. In fact, the day Jerome was let go, my boss there let me leave for the day with him since we were carpooling together.

So today, after he told me he'd been laid off, Jerome said, "and I didn't have anyone to ride home with to cheer me up." But he was glad to be rid of that job. Long commute. Unreasonable boss. I gave him my qualified congratulations because I knew he'd been wanting out of that job. He said he's been glad to spend the days since his layoff last week with his family--wife and 20-month-old twins. He'll do all right. He's already had a promising interview and has a positive outlook. Chacha and I invited him and his family to visit this weekend.

Emily has a science test and a history test tomorrow. I've been helping her study on an off throught the evening. She said her science text book might as well be written in Iraqi. But I can tell her worksheets are helping her. But I must conclude this post to help her stay on task. Melody is now in the kitchen (where they like to study) and I think she's giving Emily an excuse to be distracted.
