"Just put the lid on the empty plastic bottles and leave them as-is when you toss them in the bin, thank you." |
UPDATE:
This 2019 "snapshot" of the state of affairs in US Recycling is has changed very little (if at all) in the last two years. U.S. Recycling Industry Is Struggling To Figure Out A Future Without China https://t.co/s6uV5JDLTr

UPDATE:
♻️🥫🛍️🗑️🌊- 9 million tons of plastic enters our oceans every year! Consumers & towns (taxpayers) shouldn't bear the brunt of the costs. There are now calls for plastics manufacturers to pay for the recycling and disposal of their own products. https://t.co/mtQVIdGzLX

UPDATE: A reliable source has told me that the reason recycling processors want us to not crush plastic bottles before we put them in the bin is that the automatic sensors on the machinery that helps recycle them is programed to recognize and identify only the un-smashed bottle shapes. Sounds pretty lame to me but it might be the case.
With that in mind here's a tweet that promotes returning to the more easily recyclable aluminum containers:
