It is partially in response to the "Momo Challenge" Suicide Game hoax (exposed as a hoax by Snopes and others).
Hoax it may well be but I think that Momo which is based on a photo of a sculpture in a museum in Japan that features scary 'Horror" art, will become as popular in children 'bogeyman' folklore as Slenderman.

(3) if there’s literally no mainstream outlet or journalist covering it after a few hours, check carefully for a reason why
