Too Bad Bleeding Hearts Don't Bloom on Valentine's Day

Points of exquisite visual delight, flowers are treasures that require no admission fee. Whether cultivated in the home yard and garden or springing wild along the roadside, these fragrant wonders of the warmer seasons tug at my romantic nature.

Amidst the blossoms and blooms that burst upon us in Spring and release us from the dreary captivity of the colorless Winter, I am especially fond of a little flower that cascades upon tendrils near the front step of my house. Like many duplicate pendants this hanging group of delicately crafted petals mesmerize me every year in mid-to-late April. Aptly named The Bleeding Heart, it looks as if a riven valentine has been opened to spill a drop of, not just blood, but with some admixture of some white, ethereal substance, then frozen in the moment. Such design. Such tender mystery. It speaks to the perennial dynamic of the loving open heart that is vulnerable to pain and loss.
